Unshame North Carolina is an evidence-informed public health initiative striving to end the stigma that stops people with substance use disorder (SUD) from finding treatment. Each person featured is a North Carolinian sharing their personal stories of hope and strength. This initiative is brought to you by the Department of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services (DMHDDSUS) in partnership with Shatterproof.

Peter calls recovery a “team sport.” He knows we all need each other, and things feel more possible when we lift one another up. By sharing his story, he hopes to spark real conversations that bring people together and help build safer, more accepting communities. 💛

“My favorite part of recovery is that my life has gotten better in every way,” Peter says. Today, he sees that his relationships, his work performance, and his physical health are all much stronger. He’s also built a deep connection with God and a sense of spirituality that inspires him every day. 💯

Peter’s family helped him feel safe asking for help. He once felt ashamed of his relationship to substances and tried to handle everything alone. However, his wife and sons encouraged him to reach out and use the resources available him, which made all the difference. He’s so grateful for their love and support. Christina believes in choosing compassion over judgment and empathy over stigma. ❤️ As someone in recovery from a substance use disorder (SUD), she’s faced challenges finding housing and jobs. That’s why she encourages everyone to lead with love and support others whenever they can, as it can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Irene’s biggest motivation in her recovery was wanting to make her family proud. Along the way, she learned to believe in herself and trust that she could handle tough challenges. Today, after all her hard work, Irene feels proud of the person she’s become.
